Workshop as part of the Symposium on Communication in Deer
The symposium is also accompanied with a workshop about how to measure the acoustic properties of vocalizations using the sound analysis computer program Praat (free software):
1. introductory lecture by Dr. Reby regarding the production of sound
2. description and demonstration of how to use Praat to measure acoustic parameters of sounds
3. hands-on session where participants will learn how to use Praat on their own laptops to analyze their own animal vocalizations (or supplied vocalizations)
The idea is that by the end of the workshop, the participants will have a solid grounding in the basics of sound production and analysis as well as hands-on experience using the sound program Praat.
The participants must bring their laptop and, if available, animal vocalizations they would like to work with.
If you plan to bring magnetic tape recordings, you will need to bring something to play them, and
a cable ending with a mini jack audio plug so that the sounds can be digitized.
Ideally get in touch with Dr. Reby ahead of the congress if having doubts.
Due to space limitation, please reserve your spot by contacting
d.reby@sussex.ac.uk, wyman.mt@gmail.com or
